Why is ESPN being broadcasted in a widescreen format?

-I woke up this morning and turned the TV on and ESPN and ESPN U are in a widescreen format. I have Verizon FiOS.hello because more ppl have hd than standard tvs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
