Region codes are used to control release. For DVD, Region 1 is US and Canada, region 2 is most of Europe. PAL and NTSC are video formats, which techically do not matter, but generally Region 1 DVDs are NTSC, and region 2 are PAL, becase of the video formats used in those regions.
You can see what region a DVD is made for by looking on the DVD cover, which will have a globe with a number, the number being the region.
DVD region codes are a digital-rights management technique designed to allow film distributors to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and price, according to the region. DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played. Look up "DVD Regions" on your computer and it will show you what region you are in. For example: The US is in Region 1. There are 6 regions. The UK and Japan are region 2. Region 2 is PAL. Ask what region a disk is for if buying online.
Hello, dear
Region Code (RC) is a DRM technique developed to allow movie studios to control DVD/Blu-ray releases according to the region, including content, release date, and price. RC is encoded in the DVD/Blu-ray video disc to restrict the area in which it can be played.
Region 1:United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories
Region2:Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland
Hope this information will be helpful for u, More details here

Hi
You can convert your region 1 or 2 CD/DVD into the other region and vice versa
you need a video converter to do this, I know ConvertXtoDVD does it (you need to chose encoding in PAL (region 2) or NTSC (region 1) according to what you want to do
2 is normaly UK/pal and 1 is USA/NTSC
Standard CD's aren't region coded.
In short the world is divided into DVD regions: region 1 is the US/Canada, Region 2 is the UK/Europe/Japan etc. A DVD will only play on a DVD player if it has the same region. So a region 2 DVD will not play on a region 1 player, unless that player has been modified to accept them, otherwise known as being 'chipped'.
Some DVD players can have a series of button presses made into the remote control (called a handset or remote hack), that will allow you to access a menu and change the region manually.
The X-Box being bought in a region 2 area will only play region 2 DVDs.
There is also a region 0, these discs will play on ANY DVD player.
As for the TV system, Japanese Region 2 DVDs will be NTSC, but they should play back OK on region 2 PAL players, as most DVD players can output a PAL signal and most TVs can handle such a signal.
The TV system is completely separate from the DVD coding. Many region 0 DVD's tend to be NTSC, so will play back on a region 2 player.
You may need to access the menu on your X-Box to tell it to output an NTSC signal and also the menu on your TV so it can properly decode the NTSC signal, so it will be in full coulour on your TV, other wise may be black and white.
