-I have a new HDTV, but just regular cable. The picture sucks, but I don't really care because I don't watch a lot of tv. I DO watch a lot of DVDs though, and I want my DVD viewing to be very clear (right now with my regular DVD player it is not clear at all). Is it possible to get a crystal clear DVD image by buying an upcoverting DVD player without having to buy HD cable?Whether or not you have cable has nothing at all to do with whether or not you'll get a good DVD picture. They are two totally separate input sources as far as the TV is concerned and what one is doing does not affect the other at all.
Therefore, an upconverting DVD player would give you a better picture whether or not you have cable. However, it still won't be as good as real HD or Blu-Ray, because DVDs simply are not high resolution. The upconverting player can improve the picture somewhat, but it cannot recreate picture information that is not there to begin with.
P.S. If you can, connect the DVD player to the TV using an HDMI cable; that will give you the best picture. And if you need to buy an HDMI cable, there is no need to spend any more than the minimum; HDMI is digital so if it works at all it is working perfectly.I don't know that an upconverting DVD player will help you that much. All HDTVs are capable of upconvert the incoming signal to the native resolution of the TV. However some do it better than others. Just make sure that your TV is set to it's native resolution.
Standard DVDs (not Blu-Rays) are SD (480 lines resolution), so cabling shouldn't be an issue. However, for the simplest cabling setup, HDMI can't be beat -- one cable carries both the video and 5.1 channel audio.
Buy a BluRay instead. It plays DVD's and all of them do a decent job upconverting.
Upconverting DVD players are not all that cheap when they do a decent job. So you may as well get the BR. As for HD Cable, here is a whole page of them and they are cheap too http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdep鈥?/a>
Connect your DVD player to the TV using component cables (R/G/B + R/W). This should improve quality significantly.
Your TV will automatically upconvert.
A good antenna will also allow you to watch HD TV off the air.
